Community Rules!

community

I remember being at an event where Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point, Blink and Outliers, shared his views on how social media contributes to isolation. He spoke about how Facebook actually disconnects people rather than the opposite.

Gladwell addressed how it was more common in the past to know one’s neighbours and to socialize with them, and how people used to feel more comfortable helping one another out. Social media has created barriers to in-person connections.

From my experience, when my health was struggling, I realized that my community was much smaller than I realized. It was more difficult to ask for help and find people who were available. This, for me, was a BIG wake-up call.

Since this realization, I have done my best to grow my community and have the courage to reach out to it.

What is your experience with community?
