Testing Your Keyword Assumptions

Google Analytics is a free easy-to-use utility to measure the number of people reading your blog, where they originated from and which keywords they used to find you. If you also have a website, your web designer should already have set up Google Analytics for you. If not, setting it up yourself is relatively simple.

The steps needed to start using Google Analytics are as follows:

1.    Ask your blog administrator to install the Google Analytics plugin.
2.    Click on “Google Analytics” and click on Sign Up
3.    Once your account is set up, provide the details to your blog administrator to verify your ownership of the blog.
4.    Sign into your Google Analytics account and click View Report for your blog.

You’ll see a chart of the number of visitors by day. Don’t be discouraged by the numbers at first. It takes time to build your first 100 readers.

The next area that’s of interest is Traffic Sources Overview. Traffic is categorized into three sections. Direct Traffic is visitors who typed your URL directly into the browser window; Referring Sites list the websites where your readers came from. For instance, if you use Twitter to market your blog, traffic from Twitter will appear here. Search Engines monitors traffic that comes from visitors who found your blog using keywords in Google or another search engine.

Click on “View Report” to access the details. You can use the Help feature of the utility for more information, although most of the information is easy to understand.

I recommend a weekly review of your blog traffic, paying particular attention to which keywords are most effective. Trends will emerge as you add posts to your blog.
