Hi, this is Jen DeTracey, the Founder of LIFT Strategies, One of Canada’s Top Marketing Strategists and the author of the book, Lift Strategies – Quick Tips to Engage Customers and Elevate Profits.

We are on question #4 of Digital Marketing 101. What platforms or channels should you use to market your business through digital marketing?

That really comes down to who you want to attract. If you have a certain type of customer that you’re working with now, you want to ask them what are they actively using as their social media channel or how are they getting information about just day-to-day stuff.

Maybe your target audience loves LinkedIn, or Facebook, or they are very much into Twitter. You may be want to reach a younger audience, and it’s Snapchat or Pinterest or Instagram, which is most popular for this specific group of fans.

You need to find out which forms of digital media are most common for your demographic. It seems right now Facebook Live is very popular, but there’s a very specific demographic.

Let’s say that you’re in coaching or consulting or some sort of personal service, you’re a personal trainer, and you know that in your area there is a prominent figure that is doing the kind of work that you aspire to be doing. Then you can look to their audience and see are they using Twitter, are they using Facebook, what is prominent for them? Are they using Snapchat? Are they blogging?

What are they doing which is driving traffic to their website? You can see the activity in each of these channels. What channels are the most active with posts and engagement?

For example, in retail, sometimes I notice Facebook is being used a lot more than Twitter . Instagram can be huge in the fashion along with Pinterest. It really depends on the audience.

Do your research, find out, before you get started. That’s going to be saving you a lot time, energy, and stress.
